  • This miniature clock is a replica of its’ Big Brother – Big Ben. Although not an exact replica, it stands out on its own merit!. It is found outside Victoria Station and always tells the time wrong.
This clock is always set on day saving time so, when other clocks switch to winter time, Little Ben stays on for the summer time option. On its’ plague this is so written as to inform the visitor and looker-on its merely mocking Time.
My hands you may retard or may advance
My heart beats true for England as for France
denoting a friendly tone towards the British-French friendship.
What’s the point of the pint-sized imitator then? Commemorative clocks of this kind were popular around the time this was made, in 1892. Its proximity to Victoria station mean it was probably there to help out non watch-carrying commuters (daylight saving was still a way off in the late 19th century).

But if its specific purpose was to commemorate Big Ben’s completion, Little Ben was 33 years late.

Although Clerkenwell is generally considered the former clock capital of London, this miniature icon was built in Croydon by Gillett and Johnston.

One peculiar thing about Little Ben is that it’s transportable. It was taken down in 1964, then put back up in 1981, with help from the french oil company Elf Aquitaine and was removed again in 2011, for extensive works to Victoria station. Little Ben has only been back in its spot since early 2016.
